What is a cryptocurrency?

A cryptocurrency is digital money secured by cryptography and recorded on a shared public ledger called a blockchain. Unlike money in a bank, most cryptocurrencies aren’t issued or controlled by any single government or company.

Bitcoin, launched in 2009, was the first. Today there are thousands, each with different purposes.

What is a blockchain?

A blockchain is a shared record of transactions copied across thousands of computers worldwide. When you send crypto:

  1. The transaction is broadcast to the network.
  2. Computers verify it’s valid.
  3. It’s bundled into a “block” and added to the chain.
  4. Every copy of the ledger updates.

Because no single party controls it and past records can’t easily be changed, it’s very hard to cheat.

What gives crypto value?

The same forces as anything else: supply and demand, plus utility. Some coins are valued as scarce digital assets (Bitcoin), others for what their networks let you do (Ethereum powers applications). Value can be volatile — prices swing far more than traditional currencies.

Key terms in one line each

  • Wallet: software or hardware that stores your keys (not the coins themselves).
  • Private key / seed phrase: the secret that controls your funds. Never share it.
  • Exchange: a platform to buy, sell, and trade crypto (like Bitget).
  • Stablecoin: crypto pegged to a stable value, usually the US dollar (e.g. USDT).
  • Volatility: how sharply prices move — high in crypto.

The risks, up front

Crypto can rise or fall dramatically. Only invest what you can afford to lose, understand what you’re buying, and be skeptical of anything promising guaranteed returns.
